The Best Alternatives for Australian Parents
If your child's Moochies watch has stopped working — or you're one of the thousands of Australian parents who bought one and now can't reach anyone at the company — you're not alone, and you're not imagining it. Moochies, once one of Australia's best-known kids smart watch brands, has collapsed.
Here's what actually happened, what your rights are, and what to do next.
What Happened to Moochies?
The short version, based on public records and an ABC News investigation:
- Moochies Holdings Pty Ltd went into liquidation. Liquidators reported the company had been insolvent from July 2022, with debts of more than $3 million.
- Telstra terminated Moochies' wholesale network agreement in March 2024 and disconnected all services on 30 June 2024. Telstra gave active customers three months free to transition to another device.
- SIM billing then resurfaced under a UK company called "Kids Tech Co", whose sole director is the 83-year-old mother of a former Moochies director, operating on the Vodafone network.
- The company is now listed as permanently closed.
- Despite all of this, Moochies watches continued to be sold through major marketplaces — leading the ACCC to remind retailers they must warn customers about limitations and refund products that don't function as sold.
Before the collapse, customers were reporting GPS locations showing children in the middle of the Indian Ocean, calls that never worked, plans that couldn't be cancelled, and being forced to cancel credit cards to stop billing. Many families were paying $14.95–$24.95 a month for a service that no longer exists.
Can I Still Use My Moochies Watch?
Unfortunately, no. Moochies watches were locked to Moochies' own SIM platform — you can't simply put another provider's SIM card in and keep going. With the underlying service disconnected and the company in liquidation, the watch itself can't be revived as a working phone or GPS tracker. What you need is a new watch, not a new SIM.
Am I Owed a Refund?
Possibly, yes — and this applies even if you can't contact Moochies:
- If you bought from a retailer (Harvey Norman, Kogan, Dick Smith, Mobileciti, Amazon, etc.) and the watch doesn't function as advertised, the ACCC says the retailer is responsible for providing a remedy — that's Australian Consumer Law, and it sits with whoever sold it to you, not the collapsed manufacturer.
- If you paid by credit card for a service you never received, ask your bank about a chargeback.
- If you're being billed by "Kids Tech Co" for a service that isn't working, you can dispute those charges the same way.
It's worth ten minutes on the phone — many parents don't realise the retailer, not Moochies, wears the refund obligation.
What to Look for in a Replacement
However you feel about Moochies, the reason you bought the watch hasn't changed: you want to reach your child and know where they are. When choosing a replacement, check five things:
- A working, maintained app — with recent updates and real reviews
- An Australian company you can actually contact — with a local support team and a published address
- Transparent plan pricing — no lock-in contracts you can't escape
- Video calling and GPS that work on day one
- Awards or review scores you can verify independently — not just claims on the box
