Unboxing and First Setup
New GL50 Genius in hand? Good news: from sealed box to working watch takes most parents about 15 minutes. Here's exactly what you'll find inside, and the setup steps in the right order — including the three settings most parents forget.

Everything you need is in the box. There's nothing extra to buy before setup.
Step 1: Charge First, Then Set Up
Clip on the magnetic charger and give the watch a full charge before anything else. First-charge conditioning matters for battery health — and it stops the watch dying mid-setup, which is the most common setup hiccup we see.
Step 2: Activate the SIM
Head to our SIM activation page and pick a plan — they start at $11.95/month for 1GB, which comfortably covers GPS, calls and video calling. There's no lock-in contract, so you can pause or change plans any time. Insert the nano SIM into the watch as shown in the quick-start guide. (In New Zealand? The GL50 works with any network provider — just use a local nano SIM.)
Step 3: Download the App and Bind the Watch
- Download the KidsOClock app from the App Store or Google Play — it's free forever, no subscription.
- Create your parent account.
- Bind the watch by scanning its QR code with the app. The watch and app pair in under a minute.
Step 4: Add Contacts
Add the approved contacts — parents, grandparents, a trusted neighbour. This is the heart of the watch's safety: only people on your list can call or message the watch, and your child can only contact people on the list. Unknown numbers simply can't get through.
Step 5: Set Safe Zones
In the app, draw your first safe zones — most families start with Home and School. You'll now get an automatic alert when your child enters or leaves each zone. This, plus real-time GPS, is what turns the watch from a phone into a safety net.
Step 6: Set Class Mode — the One Everyone Forgets
Set Class Mode for school hours: the watch locks to time-only during class, so it complies with school phone rules while staying on the wrist. GPS and SOS keep working silently in the background. Without this step, expect a note home from the teacher in week one.
Step 7: Choose Your Extras
The GL50's extras — NIO AI assistant, Spotify Kids and games — are all off or on at your command, individually, from the app. A pattern many families like: locked Monday to Friday, unlocked on weekends. Your rules, your call.
The First-Week Checklist
- Do a test video call and a test SOS from the park
- Walk the school route together once and watch the safe-zone alerts fire
- Show your child how to charge the watch — and set a charging spot at home
- Agree the rules together: when the extras work, who they can call, what the watch is for
