Setting Up Your Child's First Smart Watch:
A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose and Install a SIM Card

The watch needs a nano-SIM card from an Australian carrier. Telstra offers the best coverage in regional areas, but Optus and Vodafone work well in cities. You can add the watch to a family plan or use a prepaid SIM. Insert the SIM into the slot on the side of the watch — a small pin tool is usually included.

Step 2: Download the Parent App

Download the KidsOclock parent app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Create an account using your email and a strong password. Enable two-factor authentication for security.

Step 3: Pair the Watch with the App

Turn on the watch. The app will detect it automatically if both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. If not, scan the QR code displayed on the watch screen. This links the watch to your parent account permanently.

Step 4: Set Up Emergency Contacts

Add your phone number as the primary contact. Add a second parent, guardian, or trusted adult as a backup. These are the only numbers the watch can call or receive calls from. Be deliberate — every contact should be someone your child would genuinely need to reach in an emergency.

Step 5: Configure Safe Zones (Geofencing)

Draw a boundary around your home and your child's school. You can add more zones for regular locations — grandparents' house, sports club, local park. Choose whether you want alerts when the child enters, leaves, or both. For most families, "alert on exit" for school and home is sufficient.

Step 6: Set Classroom Mode Hours

Set the watch to silent mode during school hours. Typically 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on school days. The watch will still track location and receive SOS signals, but it will not ring, vibrate, or light up during class.

Step 7: Test Everything

Before giving the watch to your child, test every feature. Make a call. Send a message. Press the SOS button and confirm the alert reaches your phone with location data. Walk outside a safe zone and verify the alert triggers. This takes ten minutes and prevents surprises later.

Step 8: Teach Your Child

Sit down with your child and explain: how to make a call, how to press SOS, when to use each feature, that the watch stays on their wrist, and that it is for safety, not for games. Practice the SOS button together. Make sure they know it is only for real emergencies.
